2nd News Update for 2024 Marine Corps Marathon

Thank you for your continued support and dedication. We recognize that last year presented significant challenges, with a high number of critical medical emergencies and early gauntlet exercises. We have thoroughly reviewed After-Action Reports (AARs) to address these issues and improve our operations.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES PLANNING

Rest assured that comprehensive planning for the 2024 Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is well underway. The MCM staff and ARO leadership team began preparations in January. Key milestones include:

  • Initial Planning Conference in April: Major takeaways from AARs and updates on improvements.
  • Bi-weekly Special Project Officer (SPO) meetings.
  • Mid-Planning Conference and Functional Exercise.

NEW VOLUNTEER GUIDES

We have revamped our signup and assignment processes. We are excited to introduce a new two-part operator’s guide:

  1. Guide for New and Returning Volunteers: Core information on being an ARO volunteer and operating at the MCM.
  2. Tactical Operations Guide: Available by September 15, focusing on final preparations and up-to-date information. Includes a printable appendix for race day.

Specialized guides for AREDN/MEDNET, Net Control, and other roles will also be available. Digital or printed guides are recommended for race day.

RECRUITMENT EFFORTS

We urgently need your support to recruit 150 dedicated AROs for the 2024 Marine Corps Marathon. To put it in perspective, the Boston Marathon boasted over 280 amateur radio volunteers this year! Your efforts in spreading the word among friends, club members, and online forums are crucial. Every volunteer makes a difference in ensuring the success and safety of this event. If your club is interested, we can provide engaging presentations, either virtually or in person. Let’s come together and make this marathon a success—your help is invaluable! In fact, why not start by just inviting one single additional volunteer?
