MCM2024 ARO effort launches

The Marine Corps Marathon 2024 initiative officially kicked off today with the opening of both the Marine Corps Marathon Organization website (https://marinemarathon.com/volunteer) and the MCM ARO volunteer management platform on Ham Volunteers (https://hamvolunteers.com). This marks the beginning of the concerted effort to recruit volunteers who will play a crucial role in the success of the event.

Each year, the goal is to attract 150 amateur radio operators (AROs) to assist with various assignments. These assignments include managing mile markers, providing shadow support, operating net control, staffing medical tents, and more. This year’s Amateur Radio lead, Scott Larimer, emphasized the significant benefits that participating in the Marine Corps Marathon brings. “What attracted me to the Marine Corps Marathon was its training value and how it benefits not just experienced hams, but also newly licensed ones,” said Scott. He further noted, “The MCM is also a great opportunity for clubs to participate by encouraging their members to volunteer for this event.”

In the weeks leading up to the Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2024, the leadership team will be actively posting updates and news on the volunteer platforms. Volunteers are encouraged to regularly check the website and the Ham Volunteers platform for the latest information and updates. This ensures they are well-informed and prepared for their roles on race day.

The Marine Corps Marathon is not only a significant event for the runners but also a critical training ground for amateur radio operators. The experience gained from participating in such a large-scale event is invaluable. It provides a real-world application of skills and an opportunity to work alongside fellow operators in a dynamic environment. The involvement of amateur radio operators is integral to the safety and smooth operation of the marathon, making their participation essential.

Scott Larimer highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, stating that it is an excellent opportunity for both seasoned and new operators to contribute and learn. He mentioned that the Marine Corps Marathon offers a unique platform for clubs to get involved, promoting camaraderie and collective participation among members.

As the marathon date approaches, the organizing team is committed to keeping volunteers engaged and informed. Regular updates will be posted to ensure everyone is aware of their responsibilities and any new developments. This proactive communication strategy is designed to foster a sense of community and readiness among the volunteers, ensuring that they are well-prepared to support the event effectively.

Hopefully, the Marine Corps Marathon 2024 will be a memorable event, with the support of dedicated amateur radio operators playing a pivotal role. The opening of the volunteer registration platforms marks the first step in assembling a capable and enthusiastic team of AROs. Volunteers are encouraged to stay updated and actively participate in the lead-up to the marathon, ensuring a successful and well-coordinated event.
